Inspiration
I wanted to create a heavily illustration based piece loosely inspired by what I saw at MIAD. I found two artists with stylistic work. One is Vicky Scott. Her work is heavily Art Nouveau inspired, one of my personal favorite art movements. Scott begins by sketching, then creating handmade collages and touching them up in Photoshop.

My second inspiration is Li Zhang. She combines pop art with traditional Chinese paintings to create her works. She constantly experiments with geometry, which I want to do as well. All of her works have some symbolism that adds to her storytelling. I will be creating a sort of story line with my work, so I will be using color to create symbolism.

I wanted to test out a different process to see what would result in a cleaner final product. First I started with a sketch, then slightly erased it. Afterwards I added color and lined the work. I then did another, except I instead did line art and color second. I didn't mind the first version, but I do think the second process worked better. However, I may try the first process when I use a different medium. |
Process
1. First I sketched out the boxes, then the character I had created for this work. 2. Next I lined to piece and waited before erasing the sketch to make sure the lines wouldn't be smudged. 3. I colored panel by panel, varying the colors to convey the change in mood. The second panel's colors are darker then the first to represent the worsening feelings. The last panel is the brightest of all three to show calmness. |

Reflection
I am decently satisfied with this work. It's a little messier then I would like. I also feel like it's too simple. If I did it again I would try a different medium, possibly a type of paint. I could even use digital manipulation to refine the final product like one of my inspirations, Li Zhang, does with her work.
